Marriage can be really great but divorce can be a whole different ball game! Given the choice everyone would like to be married to their partner for life but that is not always possible. Things go wrong, the marriage breaks down, and there are irreconcilable differences which lead to divorce. If you are in this situation then here are a few tips to help you.
1. Lawyers are in business. They want to make money and the longer your divorce drags on the more money they make. It is in your best interests to find a lawyer who will try to get a settlement as quickly as possible. Ask around before hiring a lawyer and make sure you interview several before appointing one. If possible ask for references.
2. Get your private and financial records into storage where only you have access to them .NOW! Also get a private post box where you can receive private mail
3. Cancel your credit cards and close all joint accounts you have with your wife.
4. Do not cut off all communication with your wife keep the lines open. You never know, one fine day she might just talk to you and settle the whole thing amicably, without any bad blood. Remember, if you stop communicating, things will go from worse to worst-ever.
5. If you have kids this can be the hardest part of any divorce. Keep in contact with them and make sure that they know they are not to blame. Let them know that you are always there for them.
6. In court the written word is far more powerful that hearsay. Make sure that you keep all correspondence from your wife and her representatives. No matter how angry a letter makes you get don't destroy it.
7. This one is a tough one! Don't make negative comments about your wife to anyone. You never know who will tell a friend , who tells someone else and soon you get a lawyers letter telling you that you've been spreading rumors, and that my friend will cost you!.
8. Chill! Don't let your wife provoke you into being aggressive. If you're seen to be aggressive you will lose your divorce. If your wife is aggressive towards you just stay calm.
9. Do you have a support system in your relations and friends? If yes, lean on them for emotional support.
Divorces are not nice and they can get very nasty. Your wife will unfortunately be in the driving seat when it comes to a settlement. But with the right help and advice you can get what you want from the divorce not what she wants you to have.
